阅读理解。
Florence Nightingale was born in a rich family in England. When she was young, she took lessons in

music and drawing, and read many great books. She also traveled a lot with her parents.

As a child she felt that visiting sick people was both a duty and a pleasure. She enjoyed helping

them.

At last she decided that she was going to be a nurse. But her father said, "Nursing isn' t the right job for a lady. "

"Then I will make it so," she smiled.

And she went to learn nursing in Germany and France. When she returned to England, Florence started a nursing home for women.

In the Crimean War in 1854, she went with a group of thirty-eight nurses to the front hospitals. What

they saw there was terrible.

Florence used her own money and some from her friends to buy clothes, beds, medicines and food for the men. Her only pay was the smiles of' the wounded (受伤的) soldiers. But they were more than

enough for this kind woman.

Florence died at ninety. She tried to serve others through her work as a nurse all her life. Thanks to her contributions to medicine, we realize nurses do an important and necessary job.

阅读理解
That cold January night, I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was walking home

at one in the morning after a tiring practice at the theater. With opening night only a week away, I was

still learning my lines. I was having trouble dealing with my part-time job at the bank and my acting at

night at the same time.

As I walked, I thought seriously about giving up both acting and San Francisco. City life had become

too much for me. As I walked down empty streets under tall buildings, I felt very small and cold. I began

running, both to keep warm and to keep away from any possible robbers. Very few people were still

out except a few sad-looking homeless peopl e under blankets.

About a block from my apartment, I heard a sound behind me. I turned quickly, half expecting to

see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty. All I saw was a shining streetlight. Still, the

noise had made me nervous, so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment building and

unlocked the door did I realize what the noise had been. It had been my wallet falling to the sidewalk.

Suddenly I wasn't cold or tired any more. I ran out of the door and back to where I'd heard the

noise. Although I searched the sidewalk anxiously for fifteen minutes, my wallet was nowhere to be found.

Just as I was about to give up the search, I heard the garbage truck pull up to the sidewalk next to

me. When a voice called from the inside , "Alisa Camacho?" I thought I was dreaming. How could this

man know my name? The door opened, and out jumped a small red-haired man with an amused look

in his eyes. "Is this what you're looking for?" he asked, holding up a small square shape.

It was nearly 3 a.m. by the time I got into bed. I wouldn't get much sleep that night, but I had got my

wallet back. I also had got back some enjoyment of city life. I realized that the city couldn't be a bad

place as long as people were willing to help each other.

White-collar workers going to great lengths for stress relief A soldier of the South Korean special attack

corps paints his eyes during a friendly Taekwondo match at a South Korean Army Base in Pochon, north of

Seoul. Stressed out white-collar workers are scaling (攀登) skyscrapers, camping out on rooftops, smashing

up restaurants, pretending to be children and even visiting cemeteries in a bid to relieve the pressure of modern

life.

As the country's economy continues to steam ahead, once popular forms of entertainment, such as karaoke,

card games and even boxing bars, appear to be losing their appeal.

Consider the members of Shanghai's Cat Rain club. By day, this group of young women works executive

jobs, but by night they climb buildings so they can spend the night on the roof.

"It's a good way to release our pressure. You feel relaxed when you're sitting on the roof, looking up to

the sky and chatting with intimate (亲密的) friends," said Gong Ying, 25.

The stress of work is not just limited to people in Shanghai.

A recently opened restaurant in Beijing encourages customers to smash plates-as long as they are willing to

pay to replace them.

Though there has been some debate about the extravagance (奢侈) of such services, some psychologists

say the activity reflects the desire of some white-collar workers to vent their angst.

Some workers even appear eager to return to their childhoods. This May, hundreds of people took part in

a festival in which adults pretended to be children. It was an adults-only event, and participants could read

comics and eat sweets all day.

Scenic places such as parks and rivers can also help people relax and put things in perspective. But a

cemetery?

Cemetery companies in Shanghai organized visits to local graveyards for stressed-out workers in March.

The participants were taken to quiet spots in the cemetery where they could contemplate (考虑、打算) life

and their futures.

Roof-camper Chen Bin, an IT marketing professional, said she had camped out on a rooftop about 30

times. When she's not sleeping out under the stars, she also has several other adrenalin-fueled interests, such

as downhill racing and paragliding.

"Pressure may bring us distress, but it doesn't mean we can't find ways out," Chen says."Life should be

imaginative."

阅读理解.
Popular music in America is what every student likes. Students carry small radios with earphones and

listen to music before class, after class, and at lunch. Students with cars buy large speakers and play the

music loudly as they drive on the street.

Adult drivers listen to music on the car radio as they drive to work. They also listen to the news about

sports, the weather, and the life of American people. Most of the radio programmers are music.

Pop or popular music singers make much money. They make a CD or tape which radio stations use in many places. Once the popular singer is heard all over the country, young people buy his or her tapes.

Some of the money from these tapes goes to the singer. Wherever the singer goes, all the young people

want to meet him or her. Now the singer has become a national star.

There are other kinds of music that are important to Americans. One is called folk(民间) music. It tells stories about the common life of Americans. Another is called western or country music. This was started by cowboys (牛仔) who would sing at night to the cows they were watching. Today, any music about

country life and the love between a country boy and girl is called western or country music.

( ) 1. Two kinds of music are mentioned in this passage.

( ) 2. When pop singers are loved by all the young people, they will become national stars.

( ) 3. Country music is about the common life of Americans.

( ) 4. Most students in America like popular music.

( ) 5. Students with cars in America like to listen to music while driving.

1If not, and if right now you're not focusing on this article, your time might be better spent on a short

nap (小睡) to boost (促进) your focus and productivity (效率).

That's what the National Sleep Foundation says, and it's a message that health education professionals at

the University of California at Davis (a city of California, America) have been spreading to their students.

"We're familiar with the benefits of sleep," said Amelia, a student in sleep and stress at the UC Davis health

center.2For students, the benefits of increased productivity and focus will help their scores-even though

there is no data to back that up.

However, research has repeatedly shown that when students have 7-9 hours of sleep, 20-30 minute naps

do offer these benefits,3

So Jason B. Spitzer, a health educator, believes encouraging students to take naps to improve their state of

mind-not to mention stay awake during classes - is very important.

Health educators discovered that while 33 percent of Davis students didn't nap at all, three-quarters of those who did nap did so for too long-more than 30 minutes. That told the educators that a napping campaign would

have to focus on two different populations:4Health educators hand out "nap tools"; they include earplugs

(耳塞), an eye mask and a tip card with directions to more messages online. They advertise in the student

newspaper introducing napping tips and benefits, and they team with the student government to spread the

word on napping during National Sleep Awareness Week.

5"We want to improve their napping and their sleep quality." Spitzer said.

A. Did you get a complete and restful night's sleep last night?

B. non-nappers and long nappers.

C. The Davis campaign is still changing every year.

D."We're not familiar with the positive effects of napping."

E. We should try our best to nap when it is necessary.

F. Napping is very important to us.

G. particularly when taken between the hours of 10 to 11 am or 2 to 4 pm.

2Good or normal stress might happen when you're called to answer a question in class or when you

going through anything else that makes you upset every day.4

5That means making good decisions about how to spend your time. If you're only dealing with

school stuff and have no time to play, you can get stressed. Make sure you keep yourself in mind: Sleep,

A. However, there are two different kinds of stress.

B. Can you tell a kind of stress from another one?

C. The best way to keep stress away is to have a balanced life.

D. That kind of stress isn't going to help you, and it can actually make you sick.

E. Since bad stress is harmful for us, you'd better try to change it into good stress.

F. If so, then you know what stress is. Stress is what you feel when you are worried or uncomfortable

about something.
