Twenty-six years ago, Muhammad Yunus, a Bangladeshi economics teacher, was visiting a vill
age when he met a woman who made bamboo baskets. She couldnt afford to buy the bamboo to make the baskets, so she had to borrow the money from the bamboo sellers and then pay them a large part of the profit from each one she sold. There was so little money left for her to keep that she couldnt afford to buy more bamboo, so she had to borrow more money. And so the cycle continued with no way out for her. She couldnt borrow money from friends or family because they were as poor as she was. She couldnt borrow from the bank because she had no land to guarantee that she would pay back the loan. Yunus went around the village and found 41 people who were in the same position—trapped in a cycle of poverty with no escape. When he added up the amount of money that they needed to break free from the cycle, it came out to just twenty seven dollars. As Yunus says, — I felt ashamed of myself for being part of a society which could not provide even 27 dollars for 41 hard-working, skilled human beings. He lent them the money and told them to pay it back whenever they could. He got all of it back, so he went to other villages and did the same thing. He always got his money back. The official banks didnt want to get involved in what he was doing, so Yunus started his own bank. The Grameen bank was born, and with it there is a new approach to lending money-micro-credit. The bank now lends over a billion dollars to more than two million borrowers, 96% of them women, and involving more than half of the villages in Bangladesh. The repayment is 99%. The rural economy of the country has improved gready since the bank started. And the success has spread. This year it was estimated that there are now over 7 ,000 micro-credit organizations in the world, lending to over 16 million of the poorest people.

The women couldnt find a way out of the cycle of poverty because______.

A.she was not hardworking enough

B.she couldn"t borrow enough money

C.she was exploited by the bamboo seller too much

D.the profit of selling the baskets was little

第11题
Economics is the study of how societies with limited resources decide what to produce, how
to produce and for whom to produce. What, how, and for whom to produce are problems all over the world because human wants are practically unlimited, but all societies have only limited quantities of resources that can be used to produce goods or services. A knowledge of basic economics is important for understanding both the problems and opportunities that will face the world economy in the 21st century. As a student of economics, one will have the chance to discover how commerce, government policies, and day-to-day decisions made by consumers affect his living standards. The study of economics can help him understand the influence of such events as the move to free markets in Poland and Russia, or of ups and downs in interest rate and the foreign exchange rate. Economics is influenced by developments in the many different areas of business, politics, science, nature, religion and history. And whether or not one is aware of it, economics is an important part of his life. From a practical point of view, one s study of economics will help improve his decision-making skills. He learns a logical way to compare different courses of action. As he studies the concept of opportunity cost, for instance, he will discover that every choice he makes has both a benefit and a cost. Suppose someone decides to get a part time job so he can earn enough money to buy a car. He will have the benefit of owning the car, but he will pay a cost in terms of the leisure hours he gives up for working so as to pay for the car and keep it in good condition. After weighing his choice in cost-benefit terms, he may decide he does not need a car any more.

According to the passage, economics is studied to______.

A.get more resources for human beings

B.put human wants under some control

C.satisfy the unlimited human wants with the limited resources

D.produce better goods and services for all human beings
