第2题
Americans are pound of their variety and individuality, yet they love and respect few
things more than a uniform, whether it is the uniform. of an elevator operator or the uniform. of a five-star general. Why are uniforms so popular in the United States?

Among the arguments for uniforms, one of the first is that in the eyes of most people they look more professional than civilian(百姓的)clothes. People have become conditioned to expect superior quality from a man who wears a uniform. The television repairman who wears uniform. tends to inspire more trust than one who appears in civilian clothes. Faith in the skill of a garage mechanic is increased by a uniform. What easier way is there for a nurse, a policeman, a barber, or a waiter to lose professional identity(身份)than to step out of uniform?

Uniforms also have many practical benefits. They save on other clothes. They save on laundry bills. They are tax-deductible(可减税的). They are often more comfortable and more durable than civilian clothes.

Primary among the arguments against uniforms is their lack of variety and the consequent loss of individuality experienced by people who must wear them. Though there are many types of uniforms, the wearer of any particular type is generally stuck with it, without change, until retirement. When people look alike, they tend to think, speak, and act similarly, on the job at least.

Uniforms also give rise to some practical problems. Though they are long-lasting, often their initial expense is greater than the cost of civilian clothes. Some uniforms are also expensive to maintain, requiring professional dry cleaning rather than the home laundering possible with many types of civilian clothes.

第3题
Schools in the U.S. generally do not have a specific teaching plan for teachers to fo
llow, and they certainly don’t have a set of textbooks that are taught by all school districts throughout the country. That’s why textbooks vary greatly from school to school, and from teacher to teacher even though they are all teaching the same subject in the same grade. Some schools provide books to use, but teachers do not strictly follow them. They only use them as a reference, and enjoy pointing out mistakes and wrong information given in the books. They often share their own points of view with their students. Teaching like this has many advantages. Teachers can bring out their expertise, fully elaborating their most familiar areas. Students are more interested in what they are studying. Also this flexible teaching style. benefits students in the development of critical thinking skills and the ability to apply them. On the other hand teaching like this also has many drawbacks. It causes uneven study levels. It is even more so among different schools and districts. Students in the same grade do not usually have a thorough understanding of a subject taught in the same school year. The teacher for the following year would have to spend a lot of time finding out what the students already know or do not know in the subject before starting his/her own teaching plan. Some parts may be repeated, resulting in waste of time; and other parts may not be covered at all.

Exams in American schools are much less rigid than those in China. Teaching is flexible, so are exams. Even if you memorized the whole textbook, it might not be of much help in the exams. My Chinese friend envied me for nothaving to worry about the competition for attending the best schools by takingendless exams.

A、It benefits students in the development of critical thinking skills.

B、Teachers can bring out their expertise.

C、Students may have freedom in study.

(2) The flexible teaching style. ______.

A、may cause troubles to the teacher for the following year.

B、usually helps students to have a thorough understanding of a subject

C、makes the exam easy.

D、may save teachers’time

(3) The word drawbacks (paragraph 2) means______.

A、mistakes

B、difficulties

C、disadvantages

D、troubles

(4) From the passage we are told American teachers______.

A、have to follow a specific teaching plan.

B、dislike pointing out mistakes and wrong information given in the books.

C、teaching the same subject may use different textbooks.

D、strictly follow books provided by schools.

A、the advantages and disadvantages of the flexible teaching style

B、American schools

JOHN: Have you had a chance to look over the contract?

LORRIE: Yes.I've read it carefully.

JOHN: And do you have any questions?

LORRIE: No.But the contract stipulates that I will teach 22 hours a week. Will you have that many classes for me right away?

JOHN: No, probably not.For the first two weeks you may teach 10 or 15 hours.

LORRIE : But my salary will be 1 100 dollars a month. Will you pay me that much for the first month? Because, I mean, I won't be working so many hours.

JOHN: I understand. That's why I didn't write the date on the contract. For the first two weeks, we will pay you according to the hours you teach. When you have 22 hours of classes, then the contract will take effect. Is that alright with you?

LORRIE: Oh, so I don't sign the contract today. Is that right?

JOHN: I don't want you to misunderstand, Miss Briggs. We are very serious about hiring you.We want you to teach for us.We usually do contracts this way because it is more convenient.

LORRIE: I can accept that.

JOHN: Good. And your benefits will begin immediately.

LORRIE: Even my health insurance?

JOHN: Yes.We will apply for your health insurance tomorrow. And your free membership in the club starts today if you like.

LORRIE: I have a few questions about the free membership.

JOHN: What would you like to know?

LORRIE : Is my membership the same as paying club members? I mean, can I get discounts at club hotels?

JOHN: Absolutely. The only difference is in the restaurant and bar vouchers.

LORRIE: What are bar vouchers?

JOHN: Paying club members get around 300 dollars a year in restaurant vouchers. The vouchers can be used in the restaurant or the lounge. But we don't offer vouchers to employees.

LORRIE: But according to the contract, employees get a discount in the restaurant.

JOHN: That's fight. So in a way, it is cheaper for you than for the members. You get more benefits than they do.

LORRIE: So, for now, you want me to keep a copy of the contract. But we won't sign it yet.Is that right?

JOHN: Yes.I've prepared the contract just so that you understand everything, so that you understand the terms.

LORRIE: I understand. And according to the terms on the contract, I am happy to accept this job.I look forward to it.

JOHN: I'm very pleased. We look forward to having you here, Miss Briggs.
