One of the well-known of American writers is Samuel Clemens, whose pen name is Mark Twain.
Born in 1835, Twain grew up in the Mississippi River town of Hannibal, Missouri. As did many other boys of his day, Twain dreamed of traveling on river boats and of someday becoming a riverboat pilot. Twain used his memories of the life of a river town in his two most famous books, Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer.

As a young man, Twain held many jobs. He was a printer, a good miner, and, for a time, he was a riverboat pilot. During his pilot days, he adopted the name Mark Twain. This was a term used by the boatmen to mean that the water measured two fathoms, or twelve feet, which was deep enough for safe passage.

Finally Twain became a successful writer. He traveled a great deal, writing and speaking, and became very popular both in the United States and in Europe.

Twain's style. of writing was simple and direct. Among the things he wrote about were superstitious(迷信的)people and people who were easily fooled. He used his unusual gift for humor to write about many things of importance.

Generally speaking, this article is about ______.

A.a riverboat pilot

B.a printer

C.a gold miner

D.a famous writer

从供选择的答案中选出应填入下面一段英文中______内的正确答案。

In computers, encoding is the process of putting a sequence of(1)characters (letters, numbers, punctuation, and certain symbols) into a specialized(2)format for efficient transmission or storage.(3)Decoding is the opposite process—the conversion of an encoded format back into the original(4)sequence of characters. Encoding and decoding are used in data communications, networking, and storage. The term is especially(5)applicable to radio (wireless) communications systems.

The terms encoding and decoding are often used in reference to the(6)processes of analog-to-digital conversion and digital-to-analog conversion. In this sense, these(7)terms can apply to any form of data, including text, images, audio, video,(8)multimedia, computer programs, or signals in sensors, telernetry, and control systems. Encoding should not be confused with encryption, a process in which data is deliberately altered so as to(9)concealits content. Encryption can be done without changing the particular(10)code that the content is in, and encoding can be done without deliberately concealing the content.

供选择的答案:

1.terms 2.Decoding 3.processes 4.format 5.code

6.multimedia 7.applicable 8.conceal 9.equence 10.characters

"Freshman fifteen" is a term which means fifteen pounds, or about seven kilograms— the wei
ght students might expect to gain in their first year of college. People used to talk about the "freshman ten." Before that, it was the "freshman five." Are freshman more inflated, or just the expression? The fact is, many young men and women do put on extra weight when they start college. Some schools that have done research on the issue including Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, have found that freshmen gain an average of four pounds during their first twelve weeks, the equivalent of two kilograms. If weight gain continues at this rate, how long before they put on fifteen pounds? The answer is forty-five weeks, or almost a year. The next question is, why do so many freshmen gain weight? The answers listed by experts are not so surprising. One is poor diet: College students often eat foods high in fat and sugar and starch with no parents around to say no to junk food. Students may also miss meals. They could be in class or studying or just ... busy. In any case, those who miss meals are more likely to overeat when they do have food. Also, freshmen often use food to put their mind at ease. They have college pressures to deal with. Not only that, many are living away from home for the first time. Another reason college students gain weight is that they often do not get enough exercise. Finally, there is something else that can add up to the "freshman five" or ten or fifteen, alcohol. Alcohol is high in calories and this is especially true of beer. And, no, freshmen are not supposed to be drinking, not unless they are twenty-one, the legal drinking age in America. For many college students, the extra weight they put on in their freshman year can be as hard to escape as term papers and final exams.

Paragraph 1 is centered on______.

A.why freshmen put on weight in college

B.why freshmen worry about their weight

C.how the "freshman fifteen" gets its name

D.how the "freshman fifteen" amazes freshmen
