第1题
In the United States, it is not customary to telephone someone very early in the morni
ng. If you telephone him early in the day, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. The same meaning is attached to telephone calls made after 11:00 p.m. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he assumes it’s a matter of life and death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance.

In social life, time plays a very important part. In the U.S.A. guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the attention to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date. But it is not true in all countries. In other areas of the world, it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far in advance because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time differs in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderstandings arise(产生) between people from cultures that treat time differently. Promptness is valued highly in American life, for example. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible. In the U.S. no one would think of keeping a business associate waiting for an hour. It would be too impolite. A person who is 5 minutes late is expected to make a short apology. If he is less than 5 minutes late, he will say a few words of explanation, though perhaps he will not complete the sentence.

A.taken B.drawn C.given D.shown

(2) According to this passage, time plays an important role in _____.

A.everyday life B.social life

C.public life D.private life

B.It may be appropriate to send your invitation cards to your guests three or four days before a dinner party date in some countries.

C.It is best for one to make telephone calls at eight because it costs much less.

D.If one is less than 5 minutes late, he has to make a short apology.

(4) The best title for this passage is_______.

A.The Voice of Time

B.The Importance of Time

C.The Importance of an Announcement

D.Time and Tide Wait for No Man

(5) What is the purpose of the author to write this passage?

A.To tell us not to call someone very early.

B.To tell us the meaning of time differs in different parts of the world.

C.To tell us that we should treat time differently in cross-cultural communication.

D.To teach us how to apology when we are late.

It's Christmas again. We live on a dirty street in a shabby house among people who aren't much good. You can't see how pitiful it is that our neighbors have to make happiness out of this filth (污秽) and dirt. My children must get out of this. But how? The money that we've saved isn't nearly enough.

The McGaritys have money, but they are show-offs with it. The McGarity girl just yesterday stood out there in the street eating from a bag of cookies while a group of hungry children watched her. I saw those children looking at her and crying in their hearts, and when she couldn't eat any more, she threw the rest down the sewer (阴沟).

Miss Jackson who teaches at the Settlement House (教育中心) isn’t rich, but she knows things, she understands people. Her eyes look straight into yours when she talks with you. Everyboby else here looks away because they'rs ashamed of their lives. I'd like to see the children be like Miss Jackson when they grow up.

The writer suggests that her family______.

A.is extremely rich

B.is an unhappy one

C.live with nice and kind people

D.long for a change in their life

Though it is merely 1 to 3 percent of the population, the upper class possesses at least 2
5 percent of the nation s wealth. This has two segments; upper-upper and lower-upper. Basically, the upper-upper class is the "old rich"—families that have been wealthy for several generations—an aristocracy of birth and wealth. Their names are in the Social Register, a listing of acceptable members of high society. A few are known across the nation, such as the Rockefellers, Roose-velts, and Vanderbilts. Most are not visible to the general public. They live in grand seclusion(过 着显赫的退隐生活), drawing their income from the investment of their inherited wealth. In contrast , the lower-upper class is the " new rich". Although they may be wealthier than some of the old rich, the new rich have hustled(拼命干)to make their money like everybody else beneath their class. Thus their prestige is generally lower than that of the old rich, who have not found it necessary to lift a finger to make their money, and who tend to look down upon the new rich. However its wealth is acquired, the upper class is very rich. They have enough money and leisure time to cultivate an interest in the arts and to collect rare books, paintings, and sculptures. They generally live in exclusive areas, belong to exclusive social clubs, communicate with each other, and marry their own kind—all of which keeps them so distant from the masses that they have been called the out-of-sight class. More than any other class, they tend to be conscious of being members of a class. They also command an enormous amount of power and influence here and abroad, as they hold many top government positions, run the Council on Foreign Relations and control multinational corporations. Their actions affect the lives of millions.

All the following statements are true except that______.

A.the upper class owns at least a quarter of the country" s wealth

B.the "old rich" enjoy higher prestige than the "new rich"

C.the "old rich" isolate themselves and lead a lonely life

D.the upper-upper class is of aristocratic origin
