Part 2 Paragraph Organization and Development [40 points]
Questions 6-8 are based on the following task. (15 points)
Read the following paragraphs. Choose the best answer to each question. Write your answer A,B or C on the Answer Sheet.
A new generation of communications technologies is upon us. They have changed workplace communication, providing many options for sending a message. (6)_______.
Email is so pervasive in organizations that it has become the default choice for communication. People still call each other at work, but sending an email to someone in the next cubicle is common. It's no surprise that most people believe email is used too often instead of face-to-face communication.
(7)_______.For short messages and quick questions, these channels are ideal, Of course, with smart phones, email may give you an instant response as well, but this varies by organizations and people. As you probably know, the real value of IMing is“presence awareness”-you know someone is available to respond immediately. Although some people consider IM an annoying interruption at work, people who use JM are at the office report fewer disruptions and believe that TM saves time and provides timely, relevant information. One analyst predicts that in the next few years, a vast majority of the employees will use TM as their primary communications tool.
Perhaps the more interesting technologies for communication are social media. Web 2.0, which encourages online interaction, has opened the door for people to participate on the web. This is quite different from the one-way communication of the early Internet, when companies would post brochure-like website for people to consume.
The real value of social media for companies is the opportunity to connect with people online.(8)________.To promote interaction, companies use Web 2.0 technologies, for example, blogs, wikis, video, and social networking sites. These tools are used on the Internet, on a company,5 intranet and on extranets. The Fortune Global 100 companies are using social media actively. Seventy-nine percent are using at least one of four main social platforms-Twitter, videos, Facebook and blogs to communicate with customers. Of these tools, Twitter is the most frequently used and has proved useful for companies.
6. Choose the thesis statement ().
A. Depending on the type of messages, you may choose from a variety of communications technologies.
B. As business tools, mobile technologies are useful for reporting news and connecting with customers.
C. Technology is blurring many forms of communication-oral and written, face-to-face and online.
7. Choose the topic sentence for the paragraph ().
A. Texting has been considered too informal for communicating at work.

Passage 2
How can we ease the process of coming to terms with a new culture?Everyone going to work or study in an alien culture for any length of time will experience culture shock. Sooner or later frustrations and despondency stemming from trying to come to terms with unfamiliar ways will arise. However , it' s possible to take steps to lessen the severity of culture shock and to hasten adjustment to the culture of the new country , to the host culture.
First , newcomers need to remember that the host culture has its own reasons for doing things in a certain way. When you run up against difficulties , try to avoid the simple assumption that people are behaving in an unreasonable or hostile fashion. Be more charitable. Assume instead that your expectations were thwarted because you didn' t yet quite grasp the local ways. Suspend judgment until you are sure you understand the case fully.
Such understanding can come from several sources. One of the most important is from those who come from the same cultural background , who have gone through the same experience and successfully adjusted to life in the new environment. Adaptation is on occasion a two-way process. British workers in a Japanese factory in England have to learn to adapt to the different work practices imported by their Japanese managers from Japan; at the same time the latter have to become acclimatized to life in England....
21. Only a few people may experience culture shock when they come to a new culture.
22. It is important to understand that different cultures have different ways of doing things.
23. People tend to show hostile behavior. when they are in a foreign country.
24. It is useful to talk to people who are newly adjusted to the new culture.
25. It is enough for the newcomers in a culture to adapt themselves.
In social life, time plays a very important part. In the U.S.A. guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the attention to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date. But it is not true in all countries. In other areas of the world, it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far in advance because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time differs in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderstandings arise(产生) between people from cultures that treat time differently. Promptness is valued highly in American life, for example. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible. In the U.S. no one would think of keeping a business associate waiting for an hour. It would be too impolite. A person who is 5 minutes late is expected to make a short apology. If he is less than 5 minutes late, he will say a few words of explanation, though perhaps he will not complete the sentence.

Career Change
A. People who are thinking about changing careers are often afraid of what will happen if they quit their job. Will they find another one? Will they like another field as well as the one they are in now? Will they be able to grow and advance in a new organization?
B. As these questions come to mind, they should try to figure out the answers so they can reach a decision. Although there is a high rate of unemployment in some countries, there are usually jobs for skill ed workers who ca use computers or other equipment. Those who have specialized training in these areas can generally find a position without too much effort.
C .The question of whether they' II like another field more than their current one is also a crucial one. While it' s nice to dream about having another job , the reality may be that they aren't suited for it. For example , if an architect likes to cook but has no idea about how to run a business , it may be risky for him to open a restaurant. He can cook for his friends on weekends and satisfy his dreams of being a chef in that way.
D. Another good way for a person to find out if she will be successful in a new field is to try it out as a part-time job. Being an event planner sounds glamorous but helping friends with parties or weddings might show her that it also very stressful. However, if she has the creativity and organization necessary for such a position , she can continue to plan events for friends until she builds up a reputation. Then she can leave her current job to look for a job in event planning knowing that she' ll be successful in this area.
E. Once a person has found his or her specialty and decides on the change , it' s necessary to stick with it until the business gets off the ground. This usually takes about five years. If the move has been from one company to another, the person should stay until it is clear he is doing a good job and can advance to a higher position. Following this advice will make the transition smoother and the career change successful.
